Dr. Yunus, 13 others granted bail

Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with 14 others, was granted bail by the Special Judge‍‍`s Court-4 in Dhaka on Thursday, in a case involving an alleged embezzlement of Tk 25 crore 22 lakh from the Welfare Fund of Workers and Employees.

The bail was approved after the conclusion of the hearing by Judge Syed Arafat Hossain. Additionally, the next hearing for the formation of the charge in the case has been set for June 2.

The accused include Md. Nazmul Islam, Managing Director of Grameen Telecom, former Managing Director Mo. Ashraful Hasan, Director Parveen Mahmud, Najnin Sultana, Mo. Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum, Managing Director S.M. Hossain Latifi, Advocates Mo. Yusuf Ali, Jafarul Hasan Sharif, President of Grameen Telecom Workers and Employees Union Mo. Kamruzzaman, Editor-in-Chief Firoz Mahmud Hasan, Director of the Workers and Employees Union Kamrul Hasan, and representative Mo. Mainul Islam.

Last year on May 30, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with 13 others, was accused by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for allegedly embezzling money from the Workers and Employees Welfare Fund of Grameen Telecom. Gulshan Anwar, Deputy Managing Director of the institution, was named as the plaintiff in the case.

The case filed by the ACC had 13 accused, but on February 1, 2024, Gulshan Anwar, the investigating officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against Dr. Yunus and 14 others to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge‍‍`s Court.
