First formal charge filed in reconstituted Int’l Crimes Tribunal

If the tribunal accepts the charges, it will initiate the first formal trial proceedings related to the July uprising.

A case has been formally lodged with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) concerning alleged crimes against humanity committed in the Chankharpul area of Dhaka during the July uprising.

On Sunday, Chief Prosecutor Md. Tajul Islam submitted the formal charges—marking the first case filed with the tribunal since it was reconstituted following the fall of the Awami League government.

If the tribunal accepts the charges, it will initiate the first formal trial proceedings related to the July uprising.

According to Prosecutor Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim, the charges were framed after reviewing the investigation report and supporting documents submitted earlier by the ICT’s investigation agency. A hearing on the charges is scheduled to take place today.

The investigation agency submitted its report on April 21, naming eight individuals—including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman—as accused in the case. After examining the report, the prosecution officially filed the charges before the tribunal.

The eight accused are Former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakrabarti, Former Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Zone) Shah Alam Md. Akhtarul Islam, Former Assistant Commissioner (Ramna Zone) Mohammad Imrul, Former Shahbagh Police Inspector Md. Arshad Hossain, Constable Md. Sujon Hossain, Imaz Hossain and Md. Nasirul Islam.

Of these, the last four are currently in custody and have been produced before the tribunal today, while the others remain fugitives.
