In the wake of a brutal attack on a couple in broad daylight on the streets of Uttara, Dhaka, police have arrested two more individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to five.
Law enforcement officials have also recovered two machetes, believed to have been used during the assault, further intensifying the investigation.
The alarming incident, which occurred on Monday night around 9:00 PM on Road 9 of Uttara’s Sector 7, left the public horrified as the couple was viciously attacked. In an update shared during a press conference on Wednesday, February 19, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Uttara Division, Rownak Jahan, revealed the progress made in the case so far.
The press briefing was held at the DMP’s media center.
Earlier, on Tuesday, two of the attackers—Mubarak Hossain (25) and Robi Roy (22)—were arrested directly from the scene.
These individuals have already been placed on remand by the court as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrests came swiftly, as police were quick to respond to the public outrage surrounding the incident.
That same day, officers also arrested another suspect, Alfaz (22), from the Abdullahpur area.
Continuing their relentless efforts, police apprehended two more individuals—Saif (25) and Sajib (23)—last night from the Tongi area, further tightening the net around those involved in the heinous crime.
Deputy Commissioner Rownak Jahan confirmed,
“All individuals involved in the attack have now been arrested.”
She also disclosed that among the five individuals in custody, Alfaz and Saif were directly involved in the physical assault. Meanwhile, Robi Roy had an existing criminal record and was already facing charges in another case.
The gravity of the incident prompted the victimized woman to file a formal case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station early Tuesday morning.
