The court has ordered a 22-year jail term for Prashant Kumar Halder (PK), the former managing director of Global Islami Bank (formerly NRB Global) on charges of illegal wealth acquisition and money laundering.
Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka`s Special Judge Court-10 announced the verdict on Sunday (October 8). This is the first verdict in 52 cases against PK Halder.
The remaining 51 cases are still under investigation.
According to the ACC charge sheet, PK Haldar bought 6 thousand 790 percent of land in different places of the country including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi. The market value of this asset is shown as 391 crore 75 lakh 81 thousand 12 taka. Currently its market value is Tk 933 crore. Among them, he bought 4 thousand 174 percent land in his own name. Its price is shown in the document as 67 crore 94 lakh 20 thousand 930 taka. However, the current value of this asset is 228 million taka. Apart from this, there are two flats in the name of PK Halder in Dhanmondi of the capital.
The charge sheet further states that PK Halder has constructed a building in Uttara in the name of his close relative Purnima Rani Halder. The price of which is 12 crore taka. Purnima bought 109 percent land in Tejgaon, Tejturi Bazar and Green Road in the name of her brother Uttam Kumar Mistry. The market value of which is Tk 200 crore. He built an 8-storey hotel (known as Radisson) on 2 acres of land in Cox`s Bazar under the name of his company Clewistone Foods. The financial value of which is now 240 crores.
Besides, he bought 404 percent land in Dhaka and Narayanganj in the name of PK Halder`s cousin Amitabh Adhikari and Anang Mohan Roy, the current price of which is Tk 167 crore.
According to the ACC report citing information from Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) and Canadian Financial Intelligence Unit, PK Halder smuggled 1 crore 17 lakh 11 thousand 164 Canadian dollars to his brother brother Pritish Halder between 2012 and 2020. In Bangladeshi currency, the amount of which is more than 80 crore taka.
