Locals set fire to three private automobiles following a conflict with police in Dhaka`s Banasree neighborhood over the death of a domestic worker On Sunday morning
The incident occurred at 8 a.m. in front of house no. 32.
Five police officers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) at Rampura police station, were hurt when people threw brick chips at them.
The OC Mashiur Rahman said locals spotted the body of 42-year-old Asma Begum lying on road No-4 in the Banasree area around 8:30am.
Asma used to work in the house of one Kaniz Fatema, who came to her father Abdur Rob`s house in the area three days ago with Asma, he added.
Locals, including domestic workers who work in several houses in the region, became enraged and attempted to enter the building by smashing the collapsible gate, according to the OC, who added that he and a crew hurried to the scene after hearing the news.
They made it difficult for authorities to recover the body, resulting in the clash. At one point, the locals set fire to three private cars parked in the house`s garage.
A chase and counter-chase also took place.
According to the OC, more officers were dispatched to put the situation under control.
The mansion is owned by Delwar Hossain, a former tax commissioner. According to the police official, his son Mehedi Hasan, a Supreme Court lawyer, notified authorities over the phone that the woman perished after falling from the building`s roof.
The victim`s body was transported to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy, he added, adding that the cause of death will be revealed after the report was received.
So far, no one has been arrested in this case, according to the OC.
