Police have recovered the bodies of four people, including a woman and a child, from different points of the Buriganga River in Keraniganj on Saturday evening. Authorities suspect they were victims of homicide.
Around 7:30pm, river police recovered the body of a woman, aged about 30, and a boy aged 4 to 5, from the Mirerbagh area.
Both were found with pieces of cloth tightly wrapped around their necks, said Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River Police Outpost.
In a separate incident the same evening, police recovered the floating bodies of another woman and a man from the Madaripur Ghat area under Kalindi Union.
The bodies were sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital for post-mortem examinations, police said, adding that their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Mohammad Akhtar Hossain told the media that the mother and child’s bodies were recovered near the Mirerbagh Cold Storage area, while the other two bodies were found some 20 yards away near Madaripur Jame Mosque under Jinjira Union.
OC Sohel Rana of Sadarghat River Police Outpost further said the woman, recovered first, was wearing a pink salwar-kameez with a black burqa wrapped around her neck. About an hour later, the boy’s body, strangled with a scarf, was found floating in the same location.
Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain, in charge of Barishur River Police Outpost, said the other two bodies — a man aged around 40, dressed in black trousers and a check shirt, and a woman aged around 30, wearing a grey T-shirt and red salwar — were recovered from the river near Jinjira’s Madaripur Jame Mosque. Both bore minor injury marks.
Police say investigations are underway.
