Families of July Uprising victims stage protest near secretariat

Families of those killed and injured during the July mass uprising staged a protest and sit-in today (Sunday) near the Secretariat in Dhaka, demanding the resignation of Law Adviser Asif Nazrul and Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Home Affairs.

The demonstration began around 11 a.m. near the National Press Club under the banner “Families of Martyrs, Families of the Injured, and Students.” The location is close to the Secretariat, the heart of the administration. Police were present at the scene.

Speaking at the gathering, family members alleged that despite repeated demands, the perpetrators of the killings have not been arrested, while accused in the murder cases are being granted bail. They also claimed that police recently attacked family members of the victims, but no action was taken.

Rabiul Awal, brother of slain Imam Hossain Tayeb, said justice for the killings is being delayed intentionally. Injured protester Shaheen Ahmed Khan added that advisers have forgotten the pain of the victim families, pointing out that a police sub-inspector accused in the killings was granted bail.

Sheikh Mustafiz, another injured protester, said police attacked the families in front of the Secretariat on August 19, yet the government has failed to take any measures.

During the protest, demonstrators chanted slogans including “One demand, one solution: resignation of the Law Adviser” and “My brother lies in the grave, why are the killers free?”
