Sheikh Hasina sentenced to six months for contempt of court

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to six months of simple imprisonment in a contempt of court case.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a three-member panel headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar.

The other members of the tribunal include Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

Alongside Sheikh Hasina, the tribunal also sentenced another accused in the same case, Shakil Akand Bulbul (also known as Md. Shakil Alam) from Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, to two months of simple imprisonment.

The sentencing marks a significant legal development involving a former head of government, as the tribunal found their conduct to be in clear contempt of the judicial authority.

Details of the remarks or actions that triggered the case were not specified in the court order summary provided to the press.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed the court’s decision to reporters following the announcement.

This ruling adds a new layer of legal consequence to recent political tensions in the country, as Sheikh Hasina, who previously served multiple terms as prime minister, continues to face scrutiny in the post-transition landscape.
