Voting has begun on the first day of the two-day election for the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association for the 2026–27 term.
The voting started at 10am on Wednesday at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium and will continue until 5pm, with a break from 1pm to 2pm.
Elections are being held for 14 posts of the executive committee, including president and secretary. A total of 40 candidates are contesting, while 11,097 lawyers are eligible to vote.
From the BNP-backed Blue Panel, lawmaker Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon is contesting for the post of president, while Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan are running for the two vice-president posts. Mohammad Ali is contesting for secretary, Md Ziaur Rahman for treasurer, and Maksud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul for the two assistant secretary posts.
The BNP panel’s candidates for the seven member posts include AKM Azad Hossain, HM Sanzid Siddiqui, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia, Ripon Kumar Barua and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.
From the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Green Panel, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh candidate Abdul Baten is contesting for president, while Abdul Haque and Moinuddin Farooqi are running for vice-president. AKM Rezaul Karim Khandaker is contesting for secretary, SM Jahangir Alam for treasurer, and Md Tarikul Islam and Zobayer Ahmad Bhuiyan are contesting for assistant secretary posts.
The Green Panel’s candidates for member posts include Azim Uddin Patwari, Farzana Khanam, Ishrat Jahan Oni, Md Faizullah, Md Jubayer Titu, Mahmudul Hasan and Mohammad Nayeem Uddin Lincoln.
Meanwhile, the NCP-backed Red-Green Panel has not fielded any candidate for the president post. However, Azmal Hossain Bacchu is contesting for secretary, while Mostafa Asgar Sharifi is running for one of the assistant secretary posts. Its member candidates include Amina Akter Lovely, Kazi Akbar Ali, Md Bani Amin and Mazharul Islam.
Outside these panels, Yunus Ali Akand is contesting independently for president. Independent candidates for secretary include Farhad Uddin Bhuiyan, Md Abu Yahia Dulal, Md Omar Faruk and Mohammad Ashraf Uz-Zaman Khan. Md Zobayer Tayeb and Tapan Kumar Das are also contesting for member posts.
A sub-committee led by retired High Court judge Justice Md Miftah Uddin Chowdhury has been formed to conduct the election.
