The brutal killing of Lal Chand Sohag, a 39-year-old scrap goods trader, in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka will be tried in a Speedy Trial Tribunal under the Speedy Trial Act 2002.

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced this in a post on his verified Facebook page early Saturday morning. He stated that the case will be resolved swiftly to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

The murder took place in broad daylight on a busy road outside Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford Hospital).

According to CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, Lal Chand was lured to the spot, then violently attacked with bricks and stones.

His head and body were severely crushed, and he was stripped naked. Shockingly, some attackers were seen jumping on his body.

So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the killing. Law enforcement is treating the incident as a case of extreme brutality and has launched a high-priority investigation.

A murder case was filed on Thursday at Kotwali Police Station in Dhaka by Lal Chand’s sister. The case names 19 individuals and includes 15 to 20 unnamed suspects.

Initial findings suggest the motive was linked to extortion. Lal Chand was reportedly once associated with Jubo Dal, though his political links are still being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Among those arrested, two individuals have been identified: Mahmudul Hasan alias Mohin, known locally as a Jubo Dal figure, and Tarek Rahman alias Robin. The names of the other two arrestees have not been disclosed.

Following the arrests, several political organizations have taken disciplinary action. Jubo Dal has expelled two of its members: a former central assistant secretary for climate affairs and a joint convener of the Dhaka South unit.

Chhatra Dal has removed one accused from its Chakbazar Thana unit, and Swechchhasebak Dal has expelled another accused linked to their organization. These bodies have also called for legal action against the expelled individuals.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects. The shocking nature of the killing has sparked widespread outrage and intensified demands for swift and decisive justice.
