Violence in quota movement claims over 200 lives

Four additional individuals succumbed to their injuries following clashes across various districts, including the capital Dhaka. 

Three deaths occurred at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, with another fatality reported at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar on Tuesday.

According to national daily Prothom Alo, the death toll from the violence during quota movement has now reached 201. 

Hospital sources provided details of casualties: 6 on July 16, 41 on July 18, 84 on July 19, 38 on July 20, 21 on July 21, 5 on July 22; and 3 each on July 23 and 24.

The three individuals who passed away at Dhaka Medical on Wednesday were identified as Ria Gop (aged 6), Shahjahan Hriday (21), and Sajedur Rahman (22), all of whom were victims of gunshot wounds. 

Ria Gop sustained critical injuries from a police-fired blank bullet while on a rooftop during the movement, succumbing to her injuries despite treatment.

Deepak Kumar Gop, Ria‍‍`s father, lamented the loss, recalling the tragic incident on July 19 in Narayanganj Sadar. 

Shahjahan Hriday, a resident of Mahakhali, was admitted to Dhaka Medical after sustaining injuries during the protests, as confirmed by his sister Kulsoom Akhtar. 

Sajedur Rahman, a student of a madrasa in Jatrabari, was fatally shot during clashes along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, according to his brother Sirajul.

Meanwhile, Tuhin Ahmed (26) from Singair, Manikganj, passed away at Enam Medical in Savar after being shot in the abdomen. He was a mason by profession.

Following a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday afternoon to address the ongoing situation surrounding the quota movement conflicts, ministers announced plans to compile an accurate count of fatalities related to the unrest across the country. 

They indicated that relevant departments and organizations, under the Ministry‍‍`s guidance, would gather and verify this information.
