Why discrimination in heart ring prices should not be declared illegal

High Court Building

The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the discriminatory pricing of the most modern stents (heart rings) used in the treatment of heart patients should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the rule.

The defendants have been asked to reply to the rule within two weeks.

Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir stood for the writ petitioners. He was assisted by Bayezid Hossain, Nayeem Sardar and Barrister Solaiman Tushar.

In this regard, Mohammad Humayun Kabir said that the price fixed by the Department of Drug Administration is discriminatory. As a result, only four companies will survive in the market. This led to the formation of syndicates in the market and sufferings of the people.

Earlier on Sunday, 11 importer organizations, including Ocean Life Limited, filed a writ petition with the High Court expressing their dissatisfaction with the discriminatory price declaration of the Directorate General of Drug Administration.

The secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the director general of the Directorate General of Drug Administration and seven organizations and a person were made defendants in the petition.
