Police arrested a 22-year-old man identified as Sium Sarkar, a member of the banned student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), while he was allegedly attempting to set fire to a stationary bus in the capital’s Shyampur area early Sunday.
The arrest took place around 4:00 AM on Khondokar Road along the Dhaka-Mawa Highway, confirmed officials at the Shyampur Model Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
According to police sources, law enforcers received a tip-off that two individuals, reportedly linked to the BCL and acting under the instructions of local Jubo League leader Shakil Bin Shams alias Rabbi, were planning a sabotage attack. The suspects were allegedly targeting a parked bus with the intent to set it ablaze.
When police rushed to the scene, the two suspects attempted to flee. One of them, Sium Sarkar, was caught red-handed, while his accomplice, identified as Rafsan, managed to escape.
During preliminary interrogation, Sium confessed to the arson plot. A regular case has been filed against him at the Shyampur Police Station, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend the fugitive, Rafsan.
