The police have installed checkpoints and put barricade at the entry points to Dhaka city and restricted traffic on Saturday as the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party is holding its divisional mass rally at Golapbagh in Dhaka.
The initiatives are part of the government’s plan to bar people from outside Dhaka from joining the scheduled rally, BNP leaders alleged.
The police have set up a barricade near Aminbazar bridge, one of the main entry points to Dhaka, where they are restricting most of the vehicles from entering the city causing enormous suffering to the passengers, a number of passengers said.
The number of vehicles is much lower than any other days and police members are asking passengers to get down from vehicles and searching and interrogating them, they said.
Law enforcers also examined the mobile phones of the people who crosses Aminbazar and Gabtali checkpoints, they said.
The law enforcers have been allowing a few vehicles, especially carrying patients and having proof of urgent need, to enter the city, they added.
An official at Aminbazar checkpoint said that they were checking people in a bid to prevent any sabotage and to ensure people’s safety.
Similar reports were received from Keraniganj and Abdullahpur.
BNP Dhaka north city unit member secretary Aminul Haque alleged that the police put barricades at the entry points in a bid to bar people from joining their Dhaka rally.
