An extortion case has been filed against five student leaders affiliated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Democratic Student Council for allegedly demanding Tk 50 lakh from the residence of a former Member of Parliament in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Sub-Inspector Anjuman Ara of Gulshan Police Station confirmed the development on Sunday, stating that the case was filed based on a complaint by the victim, accusing the five individuals of extortion.
The accused — Md. Siam (22), Sadman Sadab (21), Md. Aminul Islam, Ibrahim Hossain (24), and Abdur Razzak Riyad (23) — were detained by police on Saturday in connection with the incident.
Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman explained that the group had introduced themselves as "coordinators" when they visited the home of Shamme Ahmed, a former MP, and demanded Tk 50 lakh.
Since she was not at home, the demand was made to her husband. A few days earlier, they had allegedly returned to the house and taken Tk 10 lakh.
When they visited again on Friday night around 8 PM, this time reportedly to collect gold ornaments, the household members alerted the police. Law enforcement then detained all five from the scene.
Following their arrest, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced the permanent expulsion of three of its members.
A press release issued on Saturday night by the organization`s Office Secretary Shahadat Hossain stated that Ibrahim Hossain Munna, convenor of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit, and members Md. Sakadoun Siam and Sadab were expelled for engaging in activities that violated organizational rules and discipline.
Similarly, the Democratic Student Council also expelled two of its central leaders — Jane Alam Apu and Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman — for their direct involvement in the extortion attempt, according to a press statement. The group distanced itself from individuals who used the title of "coordinator" to carry out such activities.
