To improve connectivity between Aftabnagar and Banasree in Dhaka, the foundation stones for three new bridges over the Narai River (Rampura Canal) have been laid.
The initiative was inaugurated on Monday (15 September) by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz at a ceremony held on Aftabnagar Lakeview Road.
According to DNCC, two of the bridges will be for vehicular traffic and one will be a pedestrian bridge. The construction will be carried out with technical assistance from the Bangladesh Navy.
Speaking as the chief guest, the DNCC administrator said the project addresses a longstanding demand from local residents.
The bridges are expected to ease traffic pressure in Aftabnagar, reduce congestion on Progoti Sarani, and mitigate travel difficulties during the metro rail project.
“Infrastructure development is not a favour to citizens, it is their right,” he said, urging residents to regularly pay holding taxes to enable faster delivery of civic services.
He also criticized unplanned activities by housing societies as a major obstacle to urbanization and announced that local-level action plans are being drawn up to ensure future urban facilities such as playgrounds and public spaces.
The ceremony was attended by DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Mamunul Hasan, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Sarwar, and Dockyard & Engineering Works Limited Managing Director Commodore Jahangir Adil Samdani, among others.
