Menon, Palak, Dastgir among four shown arrested in Shahjahan murder case

Former ministers Rashed Khan Menon, Golam Dastgir Gazi, and Zunaid Ahmed Palak, along with former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam, have been shown arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of Md Shahjahan during the July movement in Dhaka’s Banani area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadequr Rahman granted the police plea to show the four accused as arrested in the case on Wednesday (October 8).

The case was filed over the killing of factory worker Md Shahjahan, who was shot dead during an anti-discrimination rally under the Banani flyover on July 19 last year.

According to the case statement, ruling party activists and members of its associate bodies allegedly opened fire on the peaceful procession with firearms and local weapons, leaving Shahjahan critically injured with bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen. He died four days later while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police produced the accused before the court from prison on Wednesday morning. Sub-Inspector Md Yasir Arafat of Banani Police Station, the investigation officer of the case, submitted the petition to show them arrested.

During their court appearance, all four accused were seen wearing helmets and bulletproof vests.

The state counsel, Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon, confirmed the development to the media.
