3 scientists from Japan, Australia, and US win Nobel Prize in chemistry

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three scientistsSusumu Kitagawa from Kyoto University, Japan; Richard Robson from the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Omar M. Yaghi from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.

They were recognized for their discovery of metal-organic frameworks—molecular structures large enough to allow the flow of gases and liquids. These frameworks have wide-ranging applications, including collecting water from desert air, capturing carbon dioxide, storing toxic gases, and acting as catalysts in chemical reactions.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm announced the winners on Wednesday at 3:45 PM Bangladesh time.

The laureates will receive a medal, a diploma, and a total of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.1 crore SEK). In categories with multiple winners, the prize money is shared among them. The current market value of the award is around 1.2 million US dollars, or approximately 14.61 crore Bangladeshi taka.

Every year, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, while the Nobel Prize in Medicine is awarded by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
