The director of the private girls’ hostel Swopno Nibas, Rajiya Begum, has been arrested by police over allegations of assaulting a student of Dhaka University.
She was taken into custody on Tuesday night around 10 PM from the hostel located near Tejgaon College, according to Imamul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
He said, “A student of Tejgaon College filed a case regarding this incident. The hostel owner has been arrested under that case.”
The Dhaka University student from Shamsunnahar Hall had visited Swopno Nibas as a guest of the Tejgaon College student.
The student, enrolled in the 2024–25 academic year, said, “Yesterday, as my hall was closed, I went to my friend’s place. The hostel director verbally abused me using offensive language. Later, when I informed my brother and he came to bring me back, they closed the gate and physically assaulted me. Afterwards, the police rescued us from the hostel.”
She added that both she and her friend were also threatened to withdraw the case.
OC Imamul Haque said, “We will take legal action based on the investigation into the matter.”
