2 Bangladeshi fishermen drowned, 17 stranded at India’s Kakdwip

Two fishermen drowned in the Bay of Bengal after a fishing trawler carrying 19 fishermen capsized amid inclement weather on August 18 as UNB reports.

The trawler’s leader, locally known as Majhi, confirmed the news to its owner Ratan Molla over mobile phone from India’s Kakdwip. Currently the Majhi and 16 others have been staying at the island after swimming ashore.

The deceased were identified as Chhagir Hossain and Md Rafique of Barguna and Chattogram districts respectively.

Ratan Molla said the trawler carrying the 19 fishers started its journey to catch fish in the Bay on August 16.

The fishermen jumped into the sea with life jackets on August 19 when the trawler started capsizing amid the heavy storm caused by the low depression, he said.

Though the 17 fishermen managed to swim to shore, two others drowned in the sea, Ratan added.

Families of the victims, who are stranded in the Kakdwip, called upon the government to take initiative to bring back them soon.
