China has accused the United States of using retaliatory tariffs as a tool to expand its global dominance, following Washington’s decision to impose steep new duties on imports from Bangladesh and several other countries.
Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen described the tariffs as "irrational, unfair, and unjust." He argued that the move reflects the US`s broader geopolitical strategy to assert economic control over other nations.
The ambassador made the remarks during a "DCAB Talk" organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB), held at the National Press Club in the capital.
Yao Wen also stated that China would support Bangladesh in countering the negative effects of the US measures under the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO). He further stressed the need for Bangladesh to diversify its export markets and enhance its export capacity.
Currently, Bangladeshi exports face a 15% tariff in the US market. However, Washington has announced an additional 35% retaliatory tariff on top of that, scheduled to take effect from August 1. Negotiations between the two countries are ongoing.
