Two more victims have died from burn injuries sustained in last week’s gas cylinder warehouse explosion in Chandanaish, Chattogram.

According to Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon at the Emergency Department of Dhaka’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, the deceased are Md Yusuf, 32, and Idris, 27. Yusuf succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night at 9:45 pm, while Idris died on Sunday morning at 7:35 am.

Both were in the ICU with severe burns and respiratory tract damage — Yusuf had suffered burns over 57 percent of his body, and Idris over 60 percent.

The blast occurred on Thursday morning at a gas cylinder warehouse owned by Mahbubur Rahman in the Bailtoli area of Chandanaish upazila, on the border with Satkania.

The explosion happened during cylinder loading and unloading, injuring 10 people including the warehouse owner.

Four of the most critically injured victims were transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where Yusuf and Idris later died. Mahbubur Rahman, 45, has burns covering 50 percent of his body, while Riaz, 20, has burns over 40 percent and remains under treatment.

The remaining six injured were initially treated at Chattogram Medical College Hospital’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit but were later shifted to Dhaka on Friday night. Doctors said their conditions remain critical.

Among them, Akib (12) suffered burns over 33 percent of his body, Saurav (25) 16 percent, Kofil Uddin (25) 45 percent, Harun (20) 50 percent, Saleh (33) 35 percent, and Liton (30) 20 percent. Most of the injured also suffered respiratory tract damage due to inhaling hot gases, according to hospital authorities.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.
