Five people were killed after a pickup van crashed into the rear of a stationary covered van in Chattogram’s City Gate area early Monday.

The accident occurred around 5:15 am on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway under Akbar Shah Police Station, leaving four others injured.

Sub-Inspector Sajjad Hossain of Akbar Shah Police Station told media that the pickup, heading to the city from Faujdarhat in Sitakunda, rammed into a covered van parked by the roadside. Five passengers of the pickup died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Talha Bin Jasim, an official of the Fire Service’s central media cell, said a unit from Agrabad Fire Station responded to the incident and carried out the rescue operation.

The victims were identified as Roni Das, 25, Akash Das, 26, Ajit Das, 24, Jewel Das, 18, and Mohammad Sohag, 32 — all residents of different areas in Sitakunda.

Police said the deceased, along with the injured, were fish traders traveling to Chattogram’s Fishery Ghat to buy fish.
