A 51-year-old student of Rajshahi University, Shahriar Morshed Khan, has collected a nomination form to contest the upcoming Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election.
Morshed, a fourth-year undergraduate in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (2020–21 session), hails from Rajapur village in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj. Married with four daughters, his eldest recently got married and is a final-year student of Political Science at the university. His son-in-law is a resident student of Zia Hall, while Morshed himself resides at Habibur Rahman Hall.
Speaking to reporters, Morshed said, “I am married, I have four daughters. One of them was married off last month. Despite my age, I am competing alongside young students because I have always been a fighter, both in personal life and in education.”
Morshed’s educational journey is unconventional. He enrolled at Chittagong University’s Public Administration Department in 1999 but had to drop out on the eve of his final exams due to family issues. After working in various organizations, he later felt the need for a public university degree. He restarted his education under the Technical Education Board, completing SSC in 2017 and HSC in 2020. The same year, he sat for university entrance exams and was admitted to Rajshahi University.
Explaining his motivation to run, he said he had closely observed how political groups often neglected student interests. “Once elected, their words never match their actions. As an ordinary student, I want to stand by my fellow students and be their voice,” he stated.
In his election manifesto, Morshed pledged to eliminate session jams, ensure proper healthcare for students, improve the quality of dining facilities while lowering meal prices, and repair campus roads and infrastructure.
