At least six people, including the driver of a microbus, were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus in Baraigram upazila of Natore on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred around 9:30 am in the Airmari area, near the Tarmuj Pump, on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain of Bonpara Highway Police Station.
Among the deceased, only the identity of the microbus driver has been confirmed so far. He was Rubel Hossain, 32, from Gangni upazila in Meherpur district. All the victims were passengers of the microbus.
According to highway police, the Dhaka-bound microbus from Meherpur collided head-on with a cement-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.
The impact left the microbus mangled, killing five people on the spot, including the driver. Two others were critically injured and rushed to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex, where one of them succumbed to injuries.
The other injured person was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Eyewitness Mizanur Rahman said the microbus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it crashed into the oncoming truck. Among the six deceased were four women and two men.
OC Ismail Hossain confirmed that the victims were all travelling in the microbus. Efforts are underway to identify the remaining deceased.
The truck involved in the accident has been seized, although its driver fled the scene.
