AI-powered auto-fine system to launch on Dhaka–Ctg Highway

The Dhaka-Chattogram highway has been under CCTV surveillance for the past three years. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is being added to the highway’s monitoring system. The initiative will be inaugurated by the home minister on Tuesday (August 18).

According to police, around 250 kilometres of the highway will come under AI-powered surveillance. The technology will enable traffic law violations to be detected quickly, while fines can also be imposed automatically.

The Dhaka-Chattogram highway, one of the country’s most important transport corridors, was equipped with 1,427 CCTV cameras in 2023 to curb theft, robbery and other crimes. The project cost Tk 152.56 crore. Now, AI technology is being integrated into more than 700 cameras covering both sides of around 250 kilometres of the highway.

Highway Police Assistant Superintendent Moin Uddin Chowdhury said the system was being introduced to restore discipline on the highway and ensure greater security. An automated fine collection system will also come into effect alongside the AI-based monitoring.

However, transport expert Prof Md Hadiuzzaman believes that simply increasing technology-based surveillance will not be enough to ensure discipline on the highway.

Installing cameras or adding AI technology alone will not restore discipline, he said. Auto-rickshaws should not be allowed on the highway. There should also be separate service lanes.

According to police data, at least 200 incidents of export goods being stolen have been reported on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway over the past decade. Police believe that increasing digital surveillance along the highway will help reduce such crimes.
