The flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts has continued to deteriorate further.
Authorities have decided to deploy the army to rescue the flood-affected locals in Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas of Sylhet, deputy commissioner (DC) Mojibor Rahman confirmed to the media.
The water is flowing above the danger level at two points of the Surma river, one point each of the Kushiara and Sari rivers since 6 am Friday, officials of the Water Development Board (WDV) said. Besides, the water of other rivers in the district is increasing progressively, they said.
The flood water inundated more than 600 villages in Companiganj, Goainghat Sadar, Jaintapur, Kanaighat and Dakkhin Surma upazilas leaving at least 10 lakh people marooned.
Severe scarcity of food and drinking water broke out in the area. Many became homeless and remained in want of relief items.
The flood water submerged the Sylhet-Sunamganj road curtailing the vehicular movement which is totally suspended at the Sylhet-Companiganj-Bholaganj road. The Goainghat upazila also became severed from the district city.
Taltola, Jamtola, Mirzajangal, Kalighat, Masimpur, Mendibug, Upashahar, Teroratan, Zatarpur, Sobhanighat, Chalibandar and Ghashitula area of Sylhet city also went under knee-deep water.
