Police in Chattogram have arrested a constable accused of leaking a confidential wireless message issued by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner, Hasib Aziz.
The arrested constable, identified as Ami Dash, was serving in CMP’s Khulshi Police Station on deputation from the Police Teletalk Unit.
He hails from Patiya in Chattogram, and his father’s name is Rajib Dash. A case has been filed against him under the Official Secrets Act, police officials confirmed.
According to sources, on Tuesday (August 12), CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz issued a wireless directive ordering police officers to open fire immediately upon spotting armed attackers.
The instruction came after an officer of Bandar Police Station was critically injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Awami League activists.
One officer reportedly recorded the commissioner’s wireless message on video and later circulated it on social media, creating discomfort among top CMP officials. Following an investigation by multiple teams, constable Ami Dash was identified and subsequently arrested.
The incident stemmed from unrest the night before. On Monday (August 11) around 2 a.m., Awami League leaders and activists staged a procession at Saltgola Crossing near Ishan Mistri Hat. When police arrived, the protesters attacked them, leaving Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed alias Rana of Bandar Police Station seriously injured.
In his wireless message later, Commissioner Aziz directed all units—including patrol, mobile, and detective teams—to carry firearms with live ammunition during duty, as per pre–August 5, 2024 authorization. He emphasized that rubber bullets alone were insufficient and warned that no police team should return from the field as casualties.
He stated: “If anyone brandishes a weapon—whether sharp or firearm—police will open fire immediately. Every officer has the right to self-defense under Sections 96–106 of the Penal Code.”
The leak of this sensitive directive has triggered serious concern within the CMP and led to strict disciplinary action.
