The High Court has issued a stay on the allocation of an abandoned property valued at around Tk 300 crore on Dhanmondi 2nd Road in Dhaka, as well as on the construction of any infrastructure on the site.
At the same time, the court has issued a rule asking why the acquisition and allocation of the property should not be declared illegal, and why the abandoned property should not be preserved for public use.
The order was given on Monday, August 18, by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Foyez Ahmed.
The petition was represented in court by Barrister Kazi Mainul Hasan.
Earlier, in November 2022, the High Court had ruled that the abandoned property at 29 Dhanmondi 2nd Road, valued at approximately Tk 300 crore, belonged to the government.
At that time, the court also fined journalist Abed Khan Tk 10,000 for filing a petition claiming ownership of the property while concealing information.
The ruling was delivered by a separate bench comprising Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali.
In the current proceedings, the state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Kazi Mainul Hasan, while petitioner Nehal Ahmed was represented by lawyer Mohammad Abul Hashem.
