At least 15 people including four of a family were killed and scores injured in road crashes in Satkhira, Chattogram, Gazipur, Feni, Rajshahi, Manikganj, Lalmonirhat districts of the country since morning to evening on Saturday.
The deceased included two women, an eight-month-old boy, a police constable, two Indian nationals and three workers, among others.
In Satkhira, two Indian nationals died when a truck rammed into a private car at Taltala in Sadar upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Asim Kumar Biswas, 45, and Chobi Biswas, 42, of Siliguri in India’s West Bengal
Asim was the deputy manager of Khulna-Mongla port rail line project. He was on his way to India through Bhomra land port.
In Chattogram, three workers of a contractor firm were killed and another was injured when a lorry knocked them down on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on Talbaria BISIC road in Mirsarai upazila of the district.
The ill-fated people were Alamgir alias Alam, 45, Shafiqul Islam, 42 and Masud Mia, 35.
Sohel Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, confirmed the incident saying that four workers were installing a pipeline of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company on the east side of the highway.
In Gazipur, a police constable met a tragic end and his two colleagues sustained injuries when a police van veered off after being hit by a lorry at Rajendrapur Chourasta in Gazipur district in the early morning.
Victim Bitan Barua was posted at Gazipur Metropolitan Police as a constable.
In Feni, two people including the eight-month-old boy were killed and four members of a family were injured in a road accident in Fulgazi upazila of Feni in the morning.
The deceased were identified as an autorickshaw driver Saiful Islam, 22, of Haripuskarni village under the Fulgazi upazila of the district and eight-month-old Anas, son of Akram Hossain of Chiora village in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla.
The injured were the baby’s father Akram Hossain, mother Jannatul Munni, brother Hashim Bin Akram and maternal grandfather Jamal Uddin.
Akram along with his family went to the house of his father-in-law to Pubro Basantopur village in the Fulgazi upazila from Cumilla’s Chauddogram upazila a few days back.
In Rajshahi, the most shocking road accident of the day happened in Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila on Saturday afternoon.
Five people including four of a family were killed and another was injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG autorickshaw in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Insab Ali, 75, his son Ayub Ali, 38, his sister Parvin, 35, Parveen`s daughter Sharmin, 17, and autorickshaw driver Mokles Ali, 45.
The four members of the family were going to Rajshahi city from Kantapur village in Gurdaspur upazila of Natore for the treatment.
In Manikganj, a 60-year-old man was killed in a road crash at Paturia`s Ferryghat area in Shibaloy upazila.
Deceased Rafiqul Islam was a resident of Khorshedpur area of Kushtia`s Kumarkhali upazila, Anwar Hossain, sub-inspector of Shibaloy Police Station, confirmed it.
In Lalmonirhat, another sexagenarian Abiz Uddin Munshi, an imam of a mosque in Lalmonirhat` Kaliganj, was killed in a collision between an auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle.
The accident occurred at Sirajul Market area of Kakina union of the upazila on Saturday afternoon.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaz Kabir confirmed the death of Imam in the accident.
