A dramatic incident unfolded at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport when eggs were reportedly thrown at Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), shortly after his arrival.
Witnesses said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. local time on September 22, as Akhtar Hossain exited Terminal 4.
He had arrived in the United States as part of the delegation accompanying the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to eyewitness accounts, Hossain was walking with senior political figures when the eggs struck his back.
He did not respond to the provocation and continued walking. Supporters and activists from rival political groups also hurled verbal abuse at NCP’s senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, who was in the same delegation.
Following the incident, demonstrators reportedly lay down in front of the motorcade and chanted slogans including “Joy Bangla.” New York police intervened to control the situation.
Sources at JFK Airport said rival groups of supporters had gathered at the terminal hours earlier, exchanging slogans ahead of the delegation’s arrival. Later in the evening, protesters from opposing camps staged demonstrations outside Manhattan’s Grand Hyatt Hotel, where the delegation is staying.
In response to the incident, Akhtar Hossain called for accountability and legal action against those involved in the harassment and egg-throwing.
