Khelafat Majlis has officially withdrawn from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, ending its association with the opposition coalition after months of limited participation.
The decision was announced on Saturday at the party`s third general meeting of its Central Majlis-e-Shura held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in Dhaka.
In a press release signed by Central Publicity Secretary Engineer Abdul Hafiz Khasru, the party said it would no longer take part in any programmes or activities organised under the 11-party alliance.
However, Khelafat Majlis said it remained open to joining a broader political coalition in the future if circumstances required.
Party sources said signs of the split had emerged earlier this year. Following the alliance`s divisional rally in Chattogram on June 13, Khelafat Majlis formally requested that its name and those of its leaders not be used on banners or other promotional materials for alliance events.
The issue resurfaced during a rally in Rangpur, where the party`s name initially appeared before being removed following objections from Khelafat Majlis.
Since then, the party has not been included in the alliance`s publicity or programmes.
Party leaders said that although Khelafat Majlis had been part of the alliance`s initial political understanding and attended some activities after the national election, it had gradually distanced itself and had not participated in alliance events for some time before formally announcing its withdrawal.
