India passes fresh rules to ensure social media transparency

The government of India has enacted the 'Information Technology Rules-2021’ to ensure transparency, accountability and user rights through social media.

The concerned authorities of India say that we welcome social media in conducting business in our country. However, the constitution and policies of this country must be complied with. Organizations like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube must be held accountable for abuse and insults.

What the rules come with

Social media will be forced to remove unpleasant pictures and videos within 24 hours based on their complaints to ensure women's safety.

It is necessary to appoint an officer to make a complaint on social media. The officer will acknowledge receiving the complaint from the user within 24 hours and resolve the issue within 15 days.

The Indian government has divided the online platforms into two based on the number of users. One. Significant social media. Two. Social media.

Significant social media organizations such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube have to follow some additional rules.

Facebook and other major social media outlets need to appoint a chief consent officer, who will be responsible for enforcing laws and regulations. He must be a resident of India.

Large social media outlets need to hire a ‘liaison officer’ to coordinate with law enforcement. The liaison officer must be a resident of India.

Significant social media has to publish a report every month. The report must contain complaints received from the user and the resolution of the complaint and the removal of unpleasant pictures, videos.

If any medium violates the policy, the Government of India's haven provision will not apply for it.

Facebook pays feedback

The Facebook authority on Thursday cautiously welcomed the social media regulations on intermediaries, saying the company will comb through the new rules to chart its further course of action.

The company in a press statement said they have always been clear as a company and they welcomed regulations that set guidelines for addressing today’s toughest challenge on the internet.
