Bangladesh reached a new milestone in one-day cricket by securing their first-ever ODI series victory against Australia, defeating the visitors by five wickets in the second match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The win gave Bangladesh an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and extended their impressive run to four consecutive ODI series victories, strengthening their push for direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Australia`s innings got off to a disastrous start after being sent in to bat, losing three wickets without scoring a run inside the opening two overs. It was the worst start in Australia`s ODI history and left the visitors struggling to recover.
Despite the early collapse, Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett led a spirited fightback. The pair put together a crucial 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket after Australia had slumped to 81-6.
Bartlett struck an aggressive 52 off 48 balls for his maiden ODI half-century, while Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 54. Their efforts helped Australia reach 187-8 in 42 overs before rain interrupted play.
Bangladesh`s bowlers laid the foundation for the victory, with Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman taking three wickets each. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam chipped in with two wickets.
Following the rain delay, Bangladesh were set a revised target of 192 runs from 41 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
The chase began poorly when Tanzid Hasan Tamim was dismissed without scoring, but Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar steadied the innings with an 86-run stand. Both batters contributed 42 runs before departing.
Towhid Hridoy then played a composed unbeaten knock of 40 to keep Bangladesh on track. Although Australia briefly raised hopes of a comeback with a few quick wickets, captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz joined Hridoy to guide the hosts safely to the target.
The pair remained unbeaten as Bangladesh reached 195-5 with six overs to spare. Miraz fittingly sealed the landmark victory with a six, sparking celebrations among the home crowd.
Having already secured the series, Bangladesh will now aim for a clean sweep when they face Australia in the final ODI on Sunday.
