Bangladesh set Ireland a huge target in Dhaka test

Bangladesh declared their second innings on 297 for three, stretching their overall lead to a commanding 508 runs and placing Ireland under immense pressure in the Dhaka test.

The hosts tightened their grip on the match with a fluent fifty from Mominul Haque and another assured innings from Mushfiqur Rahim, pushing the score to 280 for three by lunchtime after adding 124 runs in a dominant opening session of the day.

Resuming with complete control, Bangladesh kept the scoreboard flowing at a healthy run rate of 4.24. Ireland managed to remove two set batters, but the momentum remained firmly with the home side.

Shadman Islam was the first to fall, trapped leg-before for 78 by Andy McBrine, while Jordan Neill dismissed captain Najmul Hossain Shanto with a sharp delivery that climbed on him. Ireland could have tightened the contest further, but Cade Carmichael put down a routine chance offered by Mushfiqur Rahim at deep backward square — a lapse that proved expensive.

Mushfiqur, coming off a century in the first innings, eased back into rhythm and progressed into the 40s with trademark composure. At the opposite end, Mominul Haque played with measured assurance, bringing up his 25th Test half-century. Together, the pair stitched a 106-run stand for the fourth wicket, rotating the strike confidently and capitalising on loose deliveries.

Their steady partnership allowed Bangladesh to pile on runs without rush, and there was little indication of a declaration until the total swelled past comfort.

Earlier in the contest, Bangladesh amassed 476 in their first innings before bowling out Ireland for 265 — setting the platform for their overwhelming position in the match.
