Liverpool got their hands on the domestic silverware after waiting 30 years. Certainly they would have loved to defend the title this season. At the moment it seems like an impossible daydream as they are currently fourth on the league table.
On Sunday, Guardiola’s team picked up a win at Anfield by thrashing Liverpool in a 4-1 win.
Ilkay Gundogan missed a penalty on the 37th minute but he made up for it by scoring on the 49th minute. Salah scored from the spot to equalise but Gundogan’s brace ensured that Liverpool were under pressure.
Perhaps the tipping point of the game was Liverpool Goalkeeper Alisson’s mistakes as much as it was City’s attacking prowess. Alisson Becker seemed shaky whenever there was an attack from his left side. He made a bad pass leading to the goal of Rahim Sterling who made it 3. Phill Foden also made a spectacular strike from inside the box to score the fourth and that shot too, was from Alisson’s left.
With the win over Liverpool, City are still topping the league with 50 points and they still have a game in hand. Liverpool is in fourth position, behind Manchester City and Leicester City. At this point, Liverpool’s title dream seems very much like a daydream.
