Former DGFI chief Sheikh Mamun Khaled arrested

Retired Lieutenant General Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), was arrested in a late-night operation by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Police officials confirmed that Khaled was taken into custody from his residence in Mirpur DOHS around 1:45am Thursday and brought to the DB office on Mintu Road.

Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam of DB confirmed the arrest but did not immediately disclose the specific charges.

Last year, on May 22, a Dhaka court had imposed a travel ban on Khaled, his wife Nigar Sultana Khaled, Tax Commissioner Abu Sayeed Md Mustaq, and Khondkar Abul Kaiyum, a relative of former NSI director general Major General TM Zobaier, following separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Sheikh Mamun Khaled previously served as director of DGFI’s Counter Intelligence Bureau during the army-backed caretaker government of 2007–08.

He later became DGFI’s director general under the Awami League government, holding the post from 2011 to 2013.
