Petrol pump owners across Bangladesh have warned of a possible shutdown of fuel stations, citing acute supply shortages and growing security concerns.
In a statement issued late Sunday, the Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association said pumps are facing a “critical situation” as daily fuel allocations are failing to meet rising demand.
The shortage has led to long queues at stations, with many motorcyclists waiting for hours to refuel.
Pump workers are also under increasing pressure due to extended working hours and chaotic conditions.
The association alleged that weak security at fuel stations has worsened the situation, allowing disorder and irregularities to spread.
It claimed that some individuals are purchasing fuel repeatedly and reselling it at higher prices, creating artificial scarcity.
There were also reports of organised groups forcibly opening pumps at night and taking fuel.
In one incident in Thakurgaon, miscreants allegedly looted fuel during supply operations.
Pump owners further warned of risks during fuel transportation, including threats of tanker looting.
The association said that without immediate steps to ensure adequate supply and strengthen law enforcement presence, owners may stop lifting fuel from depots, which could lead to a nationwide shutdown of operations.
It also noted that some stations were unable to reserve even minimal fuel for emergency services ahead of Eid due to excessive pressure and forced distribution.
