BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed confidence that Bangladesh will emerge as a democratic and prosperous nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He made the remarks after paying homage at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
Fakhrul said people across the country are optimistic about the current leadership and believe the government will steer the nation toward stability and development.
Reflecting on the political context, he said Bangladesh is observing Independence Day in a different environment, following years of what he described as suppression of democracy.
He claimed BNP leaders and activists faced widespread repression, including cases, killings and enforced disappearances.
He said the country has now entered a new phase after the recent political developments, creating an opportunity to build a democratic system.
Highlighting government initiatives, Fakhrul referred to programmes such as family support cards, allowances for religious leaders, canal excavation projects and financial relief for marginal farmers.
Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman placed wreaths at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. BNP leaders, including members of the party’s standing committee, were present and later joined a prayer session.
