At least 64 people, including 13 children, have been killed in an attack on a hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the strike targeted Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday night, hitting patients and medical staff.

Among the victims were two nurses and a doctor. At least 89 others, including several health workers, were injured in the attack.

The assault caused extensive damage to key sections of the hospital, including the paediatrics, maternity and emergency units, leaving the facility inoperable and cutting off essential medical services.

The WHO said the incident has further increased the death toll from attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan’s ongoing conflict to more than 2,000.

No group has claimed responsibility for the strike.
Sudan has been facing a prolonged conflict since April 2023 between government forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.

The WHO has called for an immediate reduction in violence and urged all sides to ensure the protection of civilians and healthcare workers.
