The Bangladesh government is looking forward to sending an invitation to the Argentine government for bringing the World Cup trophy to Bangladesh said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam.
The matter was revealed by the state minister on Wednesday while he was speaking with the press at an event in Rajshahi.
The minister said that since the players of the Argentine national team are very busy post-World Cup season, hence the proposal will be made to send the trophy to Bangladesh along with a representative, even if the players cannot make it here. He also added that the proposal will be sent soon.
The state minister said that Argentina acknowledges the massive fan base that they have here in Bangladesh, and hence there is a possibility their proposal to the Argentina government will be accepted.
Bangladeshi citizens defied the low temperatures, and all other hurdles to cheer for Lionel Messi in the recent World Cup. The matter was also noticed by ESPN after they posted a video of Bangladeshi fans for Argentina celebrating after Argentina's wins against several teams.
From young children to retirees, many clad in blue-and-white or waving Argentine flags, the throng stood for nearly the entire match as they watched on giant screens in the main square of the capital's Dhaka University, wrote the Buenos Aires Times following Argentina's win against Poland.
Acknowledging the immense love that Bangladeshis have for Lionel Messi, the Argentine media wrote, "The Latin football powerhouse – and star forward Lionel Messi – have a huge fanbase in the South Asian country, where cricket is king but football is building a devoted following."
More than 12,000 people chanted "Messi, Messi' while watching the matches played by Argentina on the three massive LED screens set up on DU campus.
