England midfielder Declan Rice has backed his team`s chances of finishing top of Group L despite being frustrated by a goalless draw against Ghana at the FIFA World Cup.
The result denied England an opportunity to secure early qualification for the knockout stage, leaving their fate to be decided in Saturday`s final group match against Panama.
Speaking after the game in Boston, Rice acknowledged that England struggled to break down a disciplined Ghanaian defence but insisted there was no reason for panic.
The Arsenal midfielder said Ghana`s compact approach made it difficult to create clear-cut chances, although England pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages and came close on several occasions.
Rice also praised Ghana for their defensive display, saying the Black Stars deserved credit for executing their game plan effectively and remaining organised throughout the contest.
The draw leaves both teams with hopes of progressing to the last 32, with Ghana also remaining in contention ahead of the final round of group fixtures.
Despite dropping points, Rice stressed that England remain in a strong position and are fully focused on securing a positive result against Panama.
He pointed out that many leading nations have faced difficult starts at major tournaments and said the squad remains optimistic about its prospects.
England will now turn their attention to Saturday`s decisive clash, knowing that victory could still be enough to secure top spot in the group and carry momentum into the knockout phase.
