At just 18 years old, Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal has become one of the most talked-about young talents in world football. The teenage sensation is set to face Argentina as Spain aim to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy for the first time since 2010.
If Yamal’s trademark left-footed strike finds the back of the net during the match, fans are likely to witness his familiar goal celebration. After scoring for Barcelona or the Spanish national team, Yamal crosses both hands and uses his fingers to form the number “304.”
Behind this celebration lies a tribute to his childhood roots. The “304” refers to the final three digits of the postcode of Rocafonda, the neighborhood where Yamal grew up. The full postcode is 08304, and the area is located in Mataró, Catalonia.
Although Yamal was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, he spent a significant part of his childhood in Rocafonda. It was there that his passion for football and his talent began to develop. From Rocafonda, it took around 90 minutes by train to reach Barcelona’s famous youth academy, La Masia. He joined the academy at just seven years old, where he began refining his skills.
However, “304” is not the only way Yamal pays tribute to his heritage on the pitch. He also honors his parents through his football boots. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, is of Moroccan descent, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, has roots in Equatorial Guinea.
Yamal’s specially designed Adidas F50 boots feature the number “34” along with the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea engraved on them.
After showing the “304” celebration, Yamal usually turns toward the western side of the pitch and performs a sujood (prostration) to express gratitude to Allah.
