Renowned lyricist Samaresh Majumder is no more. He died while undergoing treatment in a corporate hospital in Kolkata at 5:45 PM Kolkata local time on Monday.
Samaresh Majumder's eldest daughter Doel Majumder confirmed the news.
The 79-year-old author has had a long history of lung problem and breathing.
Samaresh was admitted to the private hospital on April 25 with a brain haemorrhage, according to the newspaper. He had breathing difficulty that worsened after his hospitalisation.
He was born on March 10, 1944. His quartet of Uttoradhikar, Kalbela, Kalpurush and Mousalkal is considered as a modern classic. Kalbela won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984.
He is also known for creating the detective character Arjun, who is the central character of the 2013 film Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan. The Bengali film Buno Haansh, which released on 15 August 2014, is also based on his novel of the same name, which was published in Pujabarshiki Anondolok.
After having primary education in Jalpaiguri high school, Samaresh shifted to Kolkata in 1960s and obtained his BA honours degree from Scottish Church College and completed his post-graduation from Calcutta University.
