During the first quarter of this year, Bangladesh saw an increase in the number of unemployed persons.
The number is increased by 2,70,000 in March compared to last December.
According to labor force survey of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) between January and March, the number of unemployed at the end of March 2023, is 25,90,000 while it was 23,20,000 in the end of December 2022.
Out of these 25 lakh 90 thousand unemployed, 17 lakh 10 thousand are men and 8 lakh 80 thousand are women.
BBS disclosed this information in a press conference held at the NEC conference room of the Ministry of Planning on Tuesday (April 2).
According to the data of BBS, the total labor force in the country is 7 crore 36 lakh 90 thousand. Among them, Male 4 crore 82 lakh 50 thousand and female 2 crore 54 lakh 40 thousand.
As many as 7 crore 11 lakh of the total labor force are engaged in work. Around 2 crore 45 lakh 60 thousand of them are women and 4 crore 65 lakh 40 thousand are men.
Maximum 3 crore 19 lakh 40 thousand engaged in agriculture, 2 crore 69 lakh 10 thousand in service sector and 1 crore 22 lakh 50 thousand in industry sector.
State Minister for Planning Dr. Shamsul Alam was present at the press conference along with secretary of Statistics and Informatics Division Dr. Shahnaz Arefin and BBS Director General Matiar Rahman.
The part of the working population of a country engaged in economic activities or willing to be employed in exchange for wages is called the labor force of the country.
In Bangladesh, if a person does not get even one hour of wage-based work in a week, as per the government, that situation is called unemployment of a person.
On April 9, BBS reported that the total population of the country is 16 crore 98 lakh.
Among them 8 crore 40 lakh 77 thousand 203 are men and 8 crore 56 lakh 53 thousand 120 are women.
According to the calculation, the number of women is 15 lakh 75 thousand 917 more than men in the country.
