Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of a Dhaka University (DU) Chhatra Dal leader near Shahbagh’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday night.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, confirmed that all three arrestees are outsiders. They have been identified as Tamim Hawlader (30), Samrat Mallick (28), and Palash Sardar (30).
According to Ashraful Islam Rafi, a fellow student, the victim, Shahriar Samya, was from Ullapara in Sirajganj and a student of the Institute of Education and Research at DU (2018–19 session). He was also a resident of room 222 in Sir AF Rahman Hall.
Rafi explained that the incident occurred when Samya was riding his motorcycle past Suhrawardy Udyan and collided with another bike. This led to an argument and physical altercation. At one point, the assailants stabbed Samya in the right thigh before fleeing the scene.
He was later declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
