5 acquitted in Raintree hotel rape case of two university students

A court has acquitted five people in the notorious rape case of two female university students at Raintree Hotel in the capital’s Banani.

On Thursday (November 11), the judge of Dhaka Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-6 Kamrunnahar passed the judgement.

The court said the prosecution could not prove the allegations made in the case, and further added that the court’s ‘time has been wasted’, according to a report published in the Prothom Alo.

The names of the five acquitted are: Safat Ahmed, son of Dildar Hossain, owner of Apon Jewelers, Sadman Sakif, friend of Safat Ahmed, Naeem Ashraf, Rahmat Ali, Safat's bodyguard and Billal Hossain, driver.

They were produced before the court from jail before the verdict was announced.

On the night of March 28, 2017, a case was filed with Banani Police Station alleging that two university students were invited to the Raintree Hotel in Banani for a party and raped.
