A large foreign ship with a depth of 10.0 meters anchored for the first time at Payra Port, the third seaport of the country in Patuakhali. Earlier, a bulk carrier with a depth of 13 meters reached the outer anchorage but could not enter due to shallow water depth.
Azizur Rahman, Deputy Director of Media and Traffic Department of the port, said that the ship entered the inner anchorage of the port on last Thursday (April, 6) afternoon.
The 188-meter long and 33-meter wide Aruna Hulya anchored at Payra Port with 37,800 tons of coal from Balikpapan port in Indonesia.
Azizur Rahman said that a big ship of Madina Group loaded with 60 thousand metric tons of coal will arrive at Payra port next week.
The authorities said that on March 26, a 75 km long channel with a depth of 10 and a half meters was constructed at Payra port, which made Payra port the deepest sea port in the country.
The port officials said that as coal can be unloaded directly from large ships, the cost of transporting coal for Payra thermal power plant will be reduced. Besides, about 200 foreign ships have unloaded goods at this port in the last two years, from which more than 516 crores of revenue has been generated.
