A.F.M. Hasan Arif, who served as the interim government’s adviser for Aviation, Tourism, and Land, has died. He passed away on Friday, December 20, following a heart attack at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka.
His assistant personal secretary, Md. Abed Chowdhury, confirmed the news of his death.
Speaking to the media, Hasan Arif’s son, Muaz Arif, shared that his father suddenly collapsed to the floor.
He was rushed to Labaid Hospital, but doctors there declared him dead upon arrival.
Hasan Arif took office as an adviser in the interim government on August 8. Before this, from 2001 to April 28, 2005, he served as Attorney General.
He also held important roles under the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed, where he oversaw the ministries of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Land, and Religious Affairs.
Born in Kolkata in 1941, Hasan Arif completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata before earning his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Calcutta.
He started his legal career in 1967 at the Kolkata High Court in West Bengal, India. Later, he moved to Dhaka and began practicing at the Bangladesh High Court.
Throughout his career, Hasan Arif worked on a range of legal matters, including advising foreign investors, handling arbitration for construction and commercial disputes, and addressing banking, corporate, and constitutional law issues.
He also focused on public procurement and alternative dispute resolution methods.
The funeral prayer (Namaz-e-Janaza) for Adviser A.F.M. Hasan Arif will be held today (20 December) after the Esha prayers at Baitul Aman Mosque, Dhanmondi 7. Additionally, another Janaza will take place tomorrow at 11 AM in the High Court premises.
