At least six people, including two children, were killed and several hundred injured after a strong earthquake struck Dhaka and surrounding districts on Friday morning.
Three of the victims died in Old Dhaka, two in Narsingdi, and one in Narayanganj.
In Kasaituli, Old Dhaka, a brick rooftop railing collapsed, killing Rafiul Islam, 21, a student of Sir Salimullah Medical College; Abdur Rahim, 48, a fabric trader; and Rahim’s son, 12-year-old Abul Aziz Remon. At least ten others were injured, most of whom had gathered near a butcher’s stall. Brig Gen Md Mazharul Islam Khan, director of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, confirmed the three were brought dead, while 20 others received treatment, with one admitted for further care.
In Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj, a 10-month-old girl, Fatema, was killed when a wall collapsed on her. Her mother and a neighboring woman were injured and are receiving treatment at a local private medical college hospital. In Narsingdi, 10-year-old Omar died after a balcony parapet collapsed on him in Sadar upazila, while 75-year-old Kazem Ali Bhuiyan was killed when his mud house caved in at Palash upazila, according to a press release from Additional Deputy Commissioner Abu Taher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman. Officials reported over 100 injuries in the district. The epicenter of Friday’s earthquake was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi.
At Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), officials said 41 patients had arrived by 2:45 pm, including two Dhaka University students. Six were admitted, while the rest received primary treatment and were released.
In Gazipur, at least 100 factory workers were injured in Tongi and Sreepur areas while evacuating buildings during the tremor. Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum, visiting injured patients at DMCH, said all government hospitals have been instructed to provide proper treatment for those affected.
